Republican
Liberty Caucus of SC Endorses Will Freeman for District 111

NORTH
CHARLESTON, SC – The Board of Directors of the Republican Liberty Caucus of
South Carolina has voted unanimously to endorse Will Freeman for election to the
South Carolina House in District 111.

“Will Freeman is a believer in free markets, less government, lower taxes, and
government reform,” Billy Hall, State Treasurer of the RLC, said following the
Board’s action. “Because his positions are on the side of Liberty — and against
increasing the scope of government — the Republican Liberty Caucus is pleased to
stand with him and encourages all of our members and the residents of District
111 to vote for Will Freeman in the June 12 primary.”

Freeman has served as the Governor and CEO of the South Carolina Student Legislature
(SCSL) – a statewide organization which serves to impart legislative experience
to university students. He successfully managed that organization’s finances,
and managed to cut spending for their annual conference down to 88% under budget
– while maintaining the same quality as conferences held in previous years. His
experience governing the SCSL will prove to be a valuable resource to his
constituents while serving in the S.C. House of Representatives.

If elected, Freeman has pledged to focus his efforts on helping small businesses in
the Charleston area prosper by removing the red tape required to start a
business, “so those who are taking the risk of starting a business won’t be
hamstrung by the government — preventing jobs from coming to our community.”

He will work to reduce the size of government, lower taxes, and make government
more accountable to the people. As a believer in individual liberty and free
market economics, the Republican Liberty Caucus of South Carolina endorses him
as a candidate for House District 111.

Charleston, SC– I am saddened and discouraged as I read the South Carolina Supreme Court’s Per Curiem in the case of Anderson v. S.C. Election Commission, in which the Justices have purged dozens of candidates from ballots throughout the state, foisting upon the people of South Carolina an election year thoroughly and expertly stacked for the political establishment incumbents.

Had this been a flagrant or careless disregard for established laws and procedures, the ruling may be just and fair, but under circumstances in which the law governing a candidate’s filing process is in its first year, it is the Court which has shown its disregard for established practices.  Attorney Kevin Hall has pointed out that state law calls for candidates found guilty of filing their Statement of Economic Interest (SEI) with the State Ethics Commission late are made to pay a fine. "You're being asked to throw into chaos the ballot process involving 100's of candidates."  A great purge at the state level is unprecedented and serves only to hobble the voters and further solidify the electoral security of establishment incumbents, most of whom will be running unopposed as a result of this ruling, offering no choice and no reason to cast a ballot for large swaths of South Carolina citizens.

The Court has shown an inability to deal with the modern needs of the people of South Carolina by interpreting the wording of a statute written before the advent of computer technology, to judge a case in which online filings are newly required by law.  As written, the statute state, “[a] candidate must file a statement of economic interests for the preceding calendar year at the same time and with the same official with whom the candidate files a declaration of candidacy or petition for nomination.”  However, state law now requires the Statement of Economic Interest to be filed online.  This begs the question, how is a candidate supposed to file online while simultaneously filing their Declaration of Candidacy in person with the S.C. Election Commission?

It is now the responsibility of all candidates, party representatives, and concerned citizens to put aside political differences and unite in opposition to this draconian judgment so that the people of South Carolina can have their voices heard through the American institution of a free and fair election.  If we sit idly by or allow our party affiliations to divide us, we will not have an election this year.

I would encourage you all to read the ruling yourselves at: http://schotline.us/2012/05/02/anderson-v-south-carolina-election-commission/

Sincerely,

Will Freeman

Republican Candidate of House District 111
